Abstract

ABSTRACT This work examine the role of the church in Nigerian politics, with a specific focus on AkwaIbom State from 1987 to 2023. The intersection of religion and politics has remained a significant aspect of Nigerian society, influencing governance, policy-making, and societal dynamics. This study seeks to shed light on how the church has played a critical role in shaping political landscapes within AkwaIbom State over the years. The research used both primary and secondary sources. Primary data was gathered through oral interviews, and group discussions with religious leaders, and members of the community, while secondary sources relied on relevant literature from the public/private libraries. Furthermore, the study seeks to explore the various ways in which the church participates in politics, such as endorsing political candidates, engaging in advocacy and lobbying, promoting social justice, and influencing policy decisions. Moreover, the project will investigate the impact of the church's involvement on governance, societal development, and the overall political landscape of AkwaIbom State. The findings of this research suggest that while the church can be a positive force in the political arena, it is important to ensure that its involvement is not abused or misused for political gain. Understanding the dynamics of the church's participation in Nigerian politics can help shape future policies, promote dialogue, and nurture a more inclusive and accountable political environment.
