DESIGN AND CONSTRUCTION OF A PORTABLE AND OPTIMIZED VEIN DETECTOR
Abstract
This project focuses on the design and construction of a portable and cost-effective vein detector aimed at improving the accuracy and efficiency of venipuncture procedures. Traditional methods of locating veins can be difficult and cause discomfort for patients. The device addresses the need for a solution that is both accessible and reliable in various medical settings. The system utilizes an ESP32-CAM microcontroller and infrared (IR) LED array to non-invasively visualize veins. The IR light is absorbed by hemoglobin in the blood, making the veins appear darker than the surrounding tissue. Real-time images captured by the camera are transmitted to a cloud server, allowing healthcare practitioners to view them on a smartphone or other connected device. Testing confirmed the device successfully captures and transmits images, demonstrating its potential for clinical use. The device's portability and use of affordable components make it a practical solution for low-resource environments. The project highlights its contributions to enhancing patient comfort and improving the efficiency of venipuncture. However, the device's reliance on internet connectivity and variations in performance across different skin tones were identified as limitation.
