ANTIBIOTIC RESISTANCE OF HEAVY METAL TOLERANT BACTERIAL ISOLATES FROM OLUSOSUN AND SOLOUS DUMP SITES IN LAGOS STATE, NIGERIA.
Abstract
Environmental pollution from indiscriminate waste disposal is a growing concern in urbanregionslike Lagos, Nigeria. Dump-sites, especially those contaminated with heavy metals, have becomepotential hot-spots for the spread of antibiotic-resistant bacteria. Heavy metal contaminationcanact as a selective pressure that promotes co-resistance to antibiotics, thereby contributingtotheenvironmental reservoir of antimicrobial resistance. This study aims to evaluate the antibioticresistance profiles of bacterial isolates previously identified as tolerant to heavy metals fromdump-sites in Lagos. A total of 19 bacterial isolates previously confirmed as heavy metal tolerant were obtainedfromlaboratory stocks. These isolates were revived, sub-cultured, and tested for antibiotic susceptibilityusing the standard Kirby-Bauer disk diffusion method. A range of commonly used antibiotics fromvarious classes—including β-lactams, tetracyclines, aminoglycosides, fluoroquinolones, andmacrolides—were selected for testing. The zones of inhibition were measured and interpretedbased on Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute (CLSI) guidelines to determine the resistanceprofile of each isolate.
