DESIGN AND CONSTRUCTION OF A SMART WASTE BIN WITH GPS MOBILE ALERT
Abstract
ABSTRACT
This project presents the design and construction of a smart waste bin with GPS mobile alert system aimed at improving waste management efficiency in urban and semi-urban environments. The increasing challenges associated with conventional waste disposal methods, such as delayed collection, overflowing bins, poor hygiene, and lack of monitoring, necessitate the development of an automated and intelligent solution.
The system integrates key technologies including an ultrasonic sensor for detecting the fill level of the waste bin, an ESP32 microcontroller for processing data, a GSM module for sending mobile alerts, and a GPS module for real-time location tracking. When the waste level reaches a predefined threshold, the system automatically sends an alert message containing the bin status and location to designated waste management personnel, enabling timely collection and efficient routing.
The design also incorporates a reliable power system using rechargeable batteries, with an optional solar charging feature for sustainability. Experimental results indicate that the system achieved an overall efficiency of approximately 96%, with fast response time, accurate detection, and improved operational reliability. Additionally, the system significantly reduced waste overflow, minimized human contact with waste bins, and enhanced environmental hygiene compared to conventional methods.
In conclusion, the smart waste bin with GPS mobile alert system provides a cost-effective, reliable, and scalable solution for modern waste management. It supports the adoption of Internet of Things (IoT) technologies in environmental management and contributes to the development of cleaner, smarter cities.
