Abstract

Abstract Groundnut is an important legume widely cultivated for oil and protein. Manual shelling of groundnut is labor-intensive, time-consuming, and often results in significant kernel breakage. This study focused on the modification and performance evaluation of a manually operated groundnut decorticator to improve threshing efficiency and reduce kernel damage. The machine was tested using three experimental trials, each with a feed mass of 2000 g of groundnut pods. Performance parameters measured included threshing efficiency, percentage of broken kernels, and percentage of unbroken kernels. For statistical reliability, replicates were generated for each trial, and data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and one-way ANOVA. Results showed that the modified decorticator achieved a threshing efficiency ranging from 61.37% to 64.13%, with broken kernel percentages ranging from 21% to 32%. ANOVA indicated significant differences (p < 0.05) in both efficiency and kernel damage among trials. The findings reveal a trade-off between higher threshing efficiency and increased kernel breakage. Overall, the modified decorticator demonstrated improved performance compared to traditional manual shelling, offering a viable option for small-scale farmers. Recommendations for further design optimization and operational improvements are provided to enhance machine efficiency and minimize kernel loss.
