Abstract

ABSTRACT Solid waste management has continued to be an undisputable environmental problem in the developing countries of the world and it stands out amongst the collections of global environmental deathtraps surrounding metropolitan cities. This study was conducted to assess the impacts of dumpsites leachates on water quality in Calabar, Nigeria. Three dumpsites were sampled, Uwanse, Lemna, and Crutech dumpsites. This was done by analyzing some physico-chemical parameters such as, Copper (Cu), Chromium (Cr), Cadmium (Cd), Lead (Pb), Nickel (Ni), pH, Dissolved Oxygen (DO), Calcium (Ca), Magnesium (Mg), and Chloride (Cl). Results revealed that concentrations of Cu, Cr, Cd, Pb, and Ni in all water samples were below the limits set by the Federal Ministry of Environment (2017) and international regulatory bodies such as WHO, FAO, EC, and USEPA. The pH levels, however, were found to be slightly acidic, falling below the recommended range of 6.5-8.5. Other parameters such as DO, Ca, Mg, and Cl were within acceptable limits. This study underscores the importance of continuous monitoring and regulatory compliance to ensure safe water quality, especially in regions with significant waste disposal activities.
