NUTRITIONAL COMPOSITION OF OVEN DRIED ADULT COCKROACHES PERIPLANETA AMERICANA (ORDER BLATTODEA)
Abstract
This study investigates the nutritional composition of oven-dried adult cockroaches, Periplaneta americana (Order Blattodea), with the aim of evaluating their potential as an alternative protein source for human and animal consumption. Insects are increasingly recognized for their high nutrient density and sustainability compared to conventional livestock, and cockroaches are abundant and widely available in many regions.
The research employed a laboratory-based experimental design, where adult cockroaches were oven-dried and analyzed for their proximate composition, including moisture, protein, fat, ash, fiber, and carbohydrate contents, as well as mineral composition (calcium, magnesium, iron, and zinc). Standard analytical methods, such as the AOAC (Association of Official Analytical Chemists) protocols, were used to ensure accuracy and reliability.
Results revealed that oven-dried Periplaneta americana is rich in protein and essential minerals, with moderate fat content and low moisture, making it highly suitable for long-term storage and nutritional applications. The study highlights that cockroaches can serve as a sustainable, nutrient-dense food source, providing a viable option to address protein deficiencies and enhance food security.
