Abstract

ABSTRACT This study investigates the perception of climate change and the adaptation strategies adopted by cowpea farmers in Biu Local Government Area, Borno State. Climate change has become a major threat to agricultural productivity in Northern Nigeria, particularly affecting smallholder farmers. A total of (___) cowpea farmers were randomly selected from different communities within Biu LGA and surveyed using structured questionnaires. The study examined farmers’ awareness of climate change, observed changes in rainfall patterns, temperature, and incidence of pests and diseases. Data on adaptation strategies such as early planting, crop diversification, use of improved varieties, and soil conservation practices were also collected. The results revealed that the majority of farmers are aware of climate change and have noticed irregular rainfall and rising temperatures affecting their cowpea production. Common adaptation strategies include early planting, mixed cropping, and use of drought-tolerant varieties. The study also found that socio-economic factors, including access to extension services and farm size, influenced the choice of adaptation measures. The findings highlight the need for enhanced extension support and government policies to strengthen adaptive capacity among cowpea farmers in Biu LGA.
