Abstract

ABSTRACT Hair relaxers are widely used cosmetic products designed to alter the texture of tightly coiled or curly hair by breaking the disulfide bonds within the hair shaft. However, conventional relaxers, especially those based on strong alkaline chemicals like sodium hydroxide, are associated with side effects such as scalp irritation, chemical burns, and long-term hair damage. This study aimed to formulate and evaluate a herbal-based hair relaxer using Nigella sativa (black seed) extract, which is known for its antimicrobial, antioxidant, and anti-inflammatory properties. The relaxer was produced using both synthetic and natural ingredients through the hot emulsification method. Antimicrobial testing was conducted using the agar well diffusion technique, during the antimicrobial testing test were conducted using the following organisms with their zone of inhibition: staphylococcus aureus (3.3mm), Escherichia coli (1.8mm), Klebsiella (1.2mm) & Dandruff (Malassezia spp) (Negative), and the pH of the product was 10.5 which was not caustic to the hair and head region. The product has been adjourned suitable for use and commercialization by tasters.
