Abstract

Acute malnutrition remains a major public health concern among children under five years in Nigeria, particularly in northern regions. This study investigates the determinants of acute malnutrition among under-five children in Talata Mafara Local Government Area. A cross-sectional design was employed, and data were collected from caregivers using structured questionnaires. Anthropometric measurements were used to assess nutritional status. Findings revealed that factors such as poverty, poor feeding practices, maternal education, household food insecurity, and limited access to healthcare services significantly influence acute malnutrition. Malnutrition contributes to approximately 45% of deaths among under-five children globally . The study concludes that improving maternal education, healthcare access, and nutrition awareness is essential in reducing malnutrition. Recommendations were made for government and stakeholders to implement targeted nutrition interventions.
