TEAM-PAIR-SOLO AND PEER TUTORING INSTRUCTIONAL STRATEGIES AND ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE OF BIOLOGY STUDENTS IN SECONDARY SCHOOLS IN MKPAT ENIN LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA
Abstract
The study was carried out to examine effect of team-pair-solo and peer tutoring instructional
strategies on Biology students’ academic performance in Secondary Schools in Mkpat Enin
Local Government Area. In order to achieve this purpose, three objectives, three research
questions and three hypotheses were formulated to guide the study. The design for the study
was quasi-experimental design. The population of the study consisted of 2574 Senior Secondary
Two (SS2) students in the 16 public secondary schools in Mkpat Enin Local Government Area.
A sample size of ninety five (95) SS2 Biology students were selected for the study using simple
random sampling technique. The researcher developed instrument entitled “Biology
Performance Test (BPT)” was used for data collection. The instrument was subjected to face
and content validity. A reliability coefficient of .83 was obtained for the instrument using KuderRichardson 20 formula. Mean and standard deviation were used to answer the research
questions while independent t-test was used for testing the hypotheses. The findings of this study
showed that: there is no significant difference in the mean performance scores of Biology
students taught the concept of skeletal system using team-pair-solo and peer tutoring
instructional strategies; there is no significant difference in the mean performance scores of
male and female Biology students taught the concept of skeletal system using team-pair-solo
instructional strategy; and there is no significant difference in the mean performance scores
of male and female Biology students taught the concept of skeletal system using peer tutoring
instructional strategy. Based on the findings of the study, it was concluded that both team-pairsolo and peer tutoring instructional strategies enhance Biology students’ academic
performance in Secondary Schools in Mkpat Enin Local Government Area. It was
recommended among others that, Teachers should regularly teach students with both teampair-solo and peer tutoring instructional strategies so as to enhance academic performance of
students.
