Abstract

The issue of delayed salary payment has become a recurring challenge in many public institutions in Nigeria, particularly in state-owned tertiary institutions. This study examines the **impact of delay in payment of salaries on workers’ performance in Abia State Polytechnic, located in Aba. Timely payment of salaries is a critical factor that influences employee motivation, productivity, and overall organizational efficiency. However, persistent delays in salary payments have been reported in several public institutions, leading to decreased morale, financial hardship among workers, and reduced job commitment. The main objective of the study is to investigate how delayed salary payments affect the performance of employees in Abia State Polytechnic Aba. Specifically, the study seeks to determine the causes of salary delays, examine the effects of such delays on workers’ motivation and productivity, and evaluate possible strategies that could improve workers’ performance despite these challenges. The study also explores the relationship between salary regularity and employees’ attitudes toward their duties and responsibilities. A descriptive survey research design was adopted for the study. The population comprised academic and non-academic staff of Abia State Polytechnic Aba. A structured questionnaire was used as the main instrument for data collection. The collected data were analyzed using descriptive statistical methods such as frequency distribution, percentages, and mean scores. The findings of the study reveal that delay in salary payment significantly affects workers’ performance by reducing motivation, lowering job satisfaction, increasing absenteeism, and decreasing overall productivity. The study also found that prolonged salary delays create financial stress for employees, which in turn affects their level of concentration, commitment, and efficiency in the workplace. Based on the findings, the study concludes that timely payment of salaries is essential for maintaining high levels of employee performance and organizational effectiveness. When workers receive their salaries regularly, they are more motivated, committed, and productive in carrying out their duties. Conversely, continuous delays in salary payments can weaken institutional productivity and undermine staff morale. The study recommends that the management of Abia State Polytechnic Aba and relevant government authorities should ensure prompt and regular payment of salaries to workers. Additionally, effective financial management strategies and proper budgetary planning should be implemented to prevent salary backlogs. Improving communication between management and employees regarding financial issues can also help reduce tension and maintain trust within the institution. Implementing these measures will not only enhance workers’ performance but also contribute to the overall development and efficiency of the institution.
