COMPARATIVE PHYTOCHEMICAL AND PROXIMATE ANALYSIS ON THE SEED AND LEAF OF THE DETERIUM SENEGALENSES (SWEET DETAR)
Abstract
ABSTRACT
This study presents a comparative analysis of the phytochemical and proximate composition of the seeds and leaves of Detarium senegalense, aiming to scientifically validate its traditional uses and evaluate its nutritional potential. Standard qualitative methods were employed to screen for alkaloids, flavonoids, saponins, tannins, and steroids, while proximate analysis determined the percentage composition of moisture, ash, crude fat, crude protein, crude fibre, and carbohydrates. The results revealed that both the seeds and leaves contain alkaloids, flavonoids, and tannins, with steroids found exclusively in the leaves, suggesting unique therapeutic properties for this plant part. Proximate analysis demonstrated significant differences, with the seeds being a superior source of macronutrients (protein, fat, and carbohydrates) and the leaves containing higher levels of dietary fibre and ash. This research concludes that the seeds are best suited for nutritional applications, while the leaves hold greater potential for specific medicinal uses. The findings provide a scientific basis for the targeted and evidence-based utilization of *Detarium senegalense* as a valuable medicinal and food resource, paving the way for further investigation into its potential applications in both nutrition and pharmacology.
