Abstract

ABSTRACT Urbanization and migration are among the most significant demographic processes shaping the socio-economic landscape of developing nations. This study provides a comprehensive analysis of urbanization and migration trends in the post-independence period in Nigeria, with a specific focus on Aba, Abia State. Aba, widely recognized as a commercial hub in southeastern Nigeria, presents a unique case for examining the dynamic relationship between population movement and national development. The study explores the historical trajectory of urban growth in Aba, identifying key drivers such as industrialization, economic opportunities, infrastructural development, and rural-urban migration. Using both qualitative and quantitative methods, data were collected from secondary sources including census reports, academic literature, and government publications. The analysis reveals that migration into Aba has been largely economically motivated, resulting in rapid urban expansion, increased informal economic activities, and significant pressure on infrastructure and social services. Furthermore, the study highlights the implications of these trends for national development, including economic growth, labor market expansion, urban poverty, and environmental challenges. Projections suggest that Aba will continue to experience significant population growth, necessitating proactive urban planning and policy interventions. The research concludes that while urbanization and migration have contributed positively to economic development, they also pose substantial challenges that must be addressed through strategic planning, investment in infrastructure, and inclusive governance. The study provides recommendations aimed at enhancing sustainable urban development and maximizing the benefits of migration for national growth.
