SIMULATION OF GAMMA-RAY SHIELDING PROPERTIES OF BAO– ZNO–BI₂O₃–B₂O₃–TEO₂ GLASS SYSTEM
Abstract
ABSTRACT
In this study, a new series of barium–zinc–bismuth–borate–tellurite (BaO–ZnO–Bi₂O₃–B₂O₃–
TeO₂) glass systems were synthesized and investigated for their gamma radiation shielding
capabilities. The glasses were prepared using the conventional melt-quenching method and
characterized for their structural and shielding properties. Key parameters such as density,
linear attenuation coefficient (LAC), half-value layer (HVL), and mean free path (MFP) were
determined using standard gamma sources. The results revealed that increasing the content of
heavy metal oxides like Bi₂O₃ and BaO significantly improved the shielding efficiency of the
glasses due to their high atomic numbers and densities. Tellurite and borate oxides contributed
to the glass-forming ability and thermal stability. Among the studied compositions, those with
higher Bi₂O₃ concentrations exhibited superior attenuation properties, making them promising
candidates for use in radiation protection applications. This research supports the development
of environmentally friendly, lead-free shielding materials suitable for medical, nuclear, and
industrial fields.
