Abstract

ABSTRACT This study explores the role of cooperative societies in the development of cocoa farms in Umuahia North Local Government Area of Abia State, Nigeria. Cocoa farming remains a significant agricultural activity contributing to livelihoods and economic sustainability. However, farmers often face challenges such as inadequate funding, poor access to modern farming inputs, and lack of technical knowledge. The research adopted a descriptive survey design, collecting data from cocoa farmers who are members of cooperative societies. Findings revealed that cooperative societies play a critical role in improving farmers’ access to credit, farm inputs, training, and market opportunities. Despite these contributions, challenges such as mismanagement, limited government support, and low participation levels persist. The study concludes that cooperative societies are vital tools for rural agricultural development but require strengthening through policy support, transparency, and farmer education. Recommendations were made to enhance their effectiveness and sustainability.
