THE USE OF POLYSTYRENE AS WALLING UNIT FOR CONSTRUCTIONS (A CASE STUDY OF LEKKI IN LAGOS STATE).
Abstract
This study investigates the suitability and effectiveness of polystyrene panels as walling units. The objectives were to assess the physical and mechanical properties of polystyrene, compare its cost with blockwork, and evaluate its thermal performance and energy efficiency. Data were obtained through questionnaires administered to civil engineers, architects, builders, and quantity surveyors, alongside cost and performance analysis. Findings indicate that while polystyrene panels may appear costlier per square meter, they reduce overall project costs by lowering labour expenses and shortening construction time. Their lightweight nature enhances ease of installation, and their superior insulation improves indoor comfort while reducing reliance on mechanical cooling. The study concludes that polystyrene walling units are a viable and sustainable alternative in Nigerian construction, providing long-term economic and environmental benefits. It recommends their adoption for faster delivery, energy efficiency, and improved project outcomes
