Abstract

This study investigated the availability and use of library information resources by undergraduate students in the Faculty of Science at Federal University of Kashere, Gombe State. The objectives were to identify the types of library resources available, assess their adequacy, determine their accessibility, and examine the challenges faced by students in utilizing them. A descriptive survey design was adopted, and data were collected using a structured questionnaire administered to 420 randomly selected students in the Faculty of Science. Data were analysed using frequency counts, simple percentages, and mean scores. Findings revealed that textbooks, journals, and reference materials were generally available and adequate for meeting students’ academic needs, although insufficient copies of high-demand textbooks were noted. Physical access to the library was satisfactory; however, remote access to electronic resources was limited. Key challenges identified included poor internet connectivity, inadequate ICT skills, restrictive library hours, and insufficient library infrastructure. The study concluded that while the library supports students’ academic activities, improvements are required in resource quantity, digital access, and ICT facilities. It recommended regular updates of library collections, procurement of additional textbook copies, enhancement of remote digital access, improved internet connectivity, and the implementation of user education programs to boost information literacy and effective utilization of resources. Keywords: Library information resources, availability, accessibility, utilization, undergraduate students, Federal University Kashere.
