Abstract

ABSTRACT The study investigated the “Influence of field trips on academic performance of biology students among senior secondary schools, in Owerri West Local Government Area, Imo State. Three research questions guided the study and were answered using mean scores and standard deviation. Survey design was used for the study. The population of the study consists of five hundred (500) SS1 students from ten (10) schools admitted in 2019/2020 session. The instrument used for data collection was a questionnaire made up of 15 items. The instrument was validated by three specialists, two in education biology and one in measurement and evaluation. The reliability of the instrument was tested using Cronbach alpha with coefficient of 0.78. The findings revealed that teachers use field trips once a year and that some teachers do not use it all in teaching and learning of biology. Also revealed among others, that field trip is an effective method of teaching since it helps students acquire useful knowledge while having fun and relaxation at the same time. The researcher recommended that extensive field trips should be organized by teachers so as to expose the students to events outside the classroom.
