Abstract

ABSTRACT Oxidative stress, resulting from an imbalance between reactive oxygen species and antioxidant defense mechanisms, plays a central role in the pathogenesis of chronic diseases. This study aims to examine the in-vitro antioxidant and scavenging properties of aqueous extracts of Launaea taraxacifolia leaves using multiple antioxidant assays, including total antioxidant capacity (TAC), ferric reducing antioxidant potential (FRAP), reducing power(RP), 2,2-azinobis-3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid (ABTS), and 2,2-diphenyl-1picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) assays. The results revealed that the extract possessed appreciable antioxidant potential. TAC and reducing power were 0.12 ± 0.04 mg AAE/100 g and 0.06 ± 0.00 mg AAE/100 g, respectively, with a moderate FRAP value of 0.26 ± 0.07 mg Fe²⁺ /100g, indicating strong electron-donating capacity. Both ABTS and DPPH assays demonstrated a concentration-dependent radical scavenging effect, with inhibition increasing from approximately 25–40% at 25 mg/mL to over 65-70% at 100 mg/ml. These findings support the ethno-medicinal use of Launaea taraxacifolia and suggest its potential as a natural source of antioxidants for nutraceutical and pharmaceutical applications. Further investigation is warranted to fully elucidate its mechanisms of action and optimize its use in clinical and industrial settings.
