EVALUATION OF HISTOPATHOLOGICAL AND BIOCHEMICAL CHANGES IN THE LIVER OF ALBINO RATS EXPOSED TO HISTOLOGY TISSUE PROCESSING SOLUTION
Abstract
Histology tissue processing is a critical step in the preparation of tissue samples for microscopic
examination. However, biomedical health workers within the laboratories setting are often
exposed to the various solutions involved in this process. This exposure might be detrimental to
vital organs such as the liver. The study was aimed at evaluating the histomorphology and serum
ALT, AST and ALP in the liver of albino rat exposed to histology tissue processing solution.
AST, ALP and ALT levels were determined by Frankel colorimetric end point method. Results
obtained were expressed as mean ± SD. Data obtained from the study were analyzed using
independent sample t-test and one-way analysis of variance which was used to compare mean,
values and considered significant at p0.05. The weight results
indicated that exposure to histology tissue processing solution had varying effects on body
weight among the rats with group A showing an increase, group B experiencing a slight decrease
and group C recording the highest increase suggesting duration and intensity of exposure may
influence weight change with a significant difference (p
