Abstract

Crime remains a significant barrier to socio-economic stability and community development. This study assesses the nature, frequency, and spatial distribution of criminal activities in selected areas of Akko Local Government Area (LGA), Gombe State. Using a descriptive research design, the study identifies prevalent crime types—such as cattle rustling, theft, and communal clashes—and maps out "hotspots" within the LGA. Data were collected through structured questionnaires administered to residents, as well as interviews with personnel from the Nigeria Police Force and local vigilante groups. The findings indicate that high unemployment, inadequate policing infrastructure, and the influx of displaced persons are key drivers of crime in the region. The study concludes that an integrated approach involving community policing and improved economic opportunities is essential for mitigating crime in Akko LGA.
