Abstract

ABSTRACT Friction is one of the most important forces in physics because it governs the interaction between two surfaces in contact. It is defined as the force that resists the relative motion or the tendency of motion between objects. Friction is everywhere in daily life and technology to investigate the effect of surface material on the coefficient of static friction this research was conducted to measure the coefficient of static friction (µ) between a wooden block and three different surfaces: wood, glass, and cloth. The inclined plane method was selected because it is a simple, reliable, and widely used method in physics laboratories Glass (Low friction, µ = 0.28): Useful in situations where sliding is required, such as glass panes in windows or laboratory slides. However, low friction also increases the risk of accidents if used in walking surfaces this confirms the theoretical principle that rougher surfaces generate more resistance to motion because of increased microscopic interlocking. Smoother surfaces, like glass, reduce interlocking and therefore have lower resistance the experiment demonstrates the direct relationship between surface roughness and static friction. The coefficient values reflect how microscopic surface properties affect macroscopic motion the main objective of this project was to investigate the coefficient of static friction between a wooden block and three different surfaces: wood, glass, and cloth. The inclined plane method was employed, and the formula µ = tan θ was used to calculate the coefficients of static friction
