Abstract

ABSTRACT The widespread use of diesel fuel in transportation and industry has led to increased exposure to diesel inhalation, a known health hazard. Prolonged inhalation of diesel fumes has been linked to various health problems, including respiratory diseases, cardiovascular disease, and cancer. This study was carried out to evaluate the antioxidative effects of Bryophyllum pinnatum extract on male wistar albino rats exposed to diesel. The study employed an experimental design to investigate the protective effects of Bryophyllum pinnatum extract against diesel fumes-induced oxidative stress and inflammation in rats. The study consisted of five groups: Group A (blank control), Group B (negative control), Group C (low-dose Bryophyllum pinnatum extract-treated), Group D (medium-dose Bryophyllum pinnatum extract-treated) and Group E (high-dose Bryophyllum pinnatum extract-treated). Each group comprised five rats, and the study duration spanned for 4 weeks. The results showed that there were no significant difference (p>0.05) between the experimental groups and the controls at week 0. After 14 days post-exposure and treatments serum MDA level increased significantly (4.32 ± 0.02) when compared to the blank control (0.48 ± 0.01). There was also no significant difference (p>0.05) between the treatment groups and the control. In conclusion, the results of the study provide valuable insights into the antioxidant effects of Bryophyllum pinnatum extract on serum markers in male Wistar albino rats exposed to diesel inhalation.
