EFFECTS OF DIGITAL LITERACY SKILLS ON LIBRARIANS' JOB PERFORMANCE IN FEDERAL UNIVERSITY OF KASHERE
Abstract
The shift from traditional to digital library services has necessitated a re-evaluation of the skill sets required by academic librarians. This study investigates the effects of digital literacy skills on the job performance of librarians at the Federal University of Kashere (FUK), Gombe State. Using a descriptive survey design, the research assesses levels of proficiency in areas such as database management, electronic information retrieval, and the use of integrated library systems (ILS). Data were collected from professional and para-professional library staff via the "Digital Literacy and Performance Questionnaire (DLPQ)." The findings reveal a significant positive correlation between high digital literacy levels and enhanced service delivery, cataloging speed, and user satisfaction. However, the study also identifies challenges such as inadequate continuous professional development (CPD) and intermittent power supply. The research concludes that digital literacy is a critical determinant of library effectiveness in the 21st century and recommends regular ICT training for all library personnel.
