Abstract

Solar energy has incredible potential to power our daily lives. Researchers suggest that theamount of sunlight that strikes the Earth's surface in an hour and a half is enough to handle theentire world's energy consumption for a full year. In this project work, a 7.5kVA solar system was designed and installed in the department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering Federal Polytechnic, IdahKogi State. Firstly, the total energy requirements of the department was obtained and this was used to estimate the number of PV solar panels required, the number of batteries and the rating, the type and rating of the solar charge controller required and the protection devices. The cost of each of the equipment were also estimated and subsequently, the equipment were procured and installed following proper installation procedures and guidelines. The system worked as planned and the department is currently been powered by the installed system.
