Abstract

ABSTRACT The need for a well planned construction is necessary in order to avoid future catastrophe which requires necessary desk study and reconnaissance to the site for survey which is carried out by an experienced registered geologist in order to identify the soil, topography, drainage type existing in the survey area which most landowners shy away from and count as misuse of resources and notwithstanding being economical one of the least expenses in lieu of any construction work. Therefore, this project work titled “the effects of sub – soil stabilization techniques on building foundation in Ugwuomu, Emene” gives details on the procedures during which some stabilizing agents can be added to reinforce soil properties. The soil stabilization technique begins in the laboratory where soils samples are analyzed to determine how much chemical modifier is necessary to permanently stabilize the soil. Stabilization process includes compaction, pre-consolidation, drainage and many other processes. The method used is wet to dry method. The various tests were carried out on the soil collected from the proposed site (Ugwuomu – Nike) for this research work was: Sieve Analysis, Moisture Content and Atterbarge Limit Test. Based on the findings, the results of the mechanical analysis and Atterberg limit tests revealed that the soil could be classified as gravely clayey soil from 0.5m down to depth 1.5m at each location. A little sample of soil from the cup in collected for moisture content determination. The moisture content obtained are plotted against the number of blows and a straight line graph is obtained. The moisture content corresponding to 25 blows is the liquid limit of the soil.
