INFLUENCE OF TEACHER'S JOB PERFORMANCE IN PUBLIC SCHOOLS: (EVIDENCE FROM ALIMOSHO LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA, LAGOS STATE.)
Abstract
This study examined the relationship between motivation and teachers’ work performance in selected public
primary schools in Alimosho Local Government Area of Lagos State. The study was carried out in response
to growing concerns over declining teachers’ commitment, productivity, and instructional effectiveness,
which have been linked to inadequate motivation in the public education sector. The objectives of the study
were to assess the effect of motivation on teachers’ work performance, identify motivational factors
available to teachers, and examine how these factors influence teachers’ commitment and job satisfaction.
A survey research design was adopted for the study. The population comprised teachers in selected public
primary schools in Alimosho Local Government Area, from which a sample size of sixty (60) teachers was
selected using a simple random sampling technique. Data were collected through a structured
questionnaire, and the instrument was validated to ensure reliability and accuracy. Descriptive statistical
tools such as frequency distribution, percentages, and mean scores were used to analyze the research
questions, while inferential statistics were employed to test the formulated hypotheses at a 0.05 level of
significance. The findings of the study revealed that motivation has a significant positive influence on
teachers’ work performance. Both financial and non-financial motivational factors, including regular
payment of salaries, promotion, recognition, training, and conducive working conditions, were found to
enhance teachers’ commitment, productivity, and instructional effectiveness. The study concluded that
adequate motivation is essential for improving teachers’ performance and achieving educational goals in
public primary schools. Based on the findings, the study recommended that government and educational
administrators should prioritize teachers’ welfare through improved remuneration, timely promotion, and
continuous professional development in order to enhance teachers’ motivation and overall performance.
