EVALUATION THE INFLUENCE OF FACEBOOK ON THE LIFESTYLE OF THE STUDENTS OF ADAMAWA STATE UNIVERSITY MUBI
Abstract
This study investigated the usage of Facebook among students, with particular emphasis on its impact on academic performance, social relationships, and health and wellness. Data were collected from 100 respondents through a structured questionnaire, with results indicating that the majority of users were young adults aged 18–25, predominantly undergraduates. Facebook usage was found to be high, with most respondents accessing the platform daily for one to four hours, primarily for socializing, entertainment, academic discussions, and accessing news. Findings revealed that Facebook offers both academic benefits—such as access to learning resources and collaborative opportunities—and challenges, including distraction and reduced study time. In terms of social relationships, it was found to enhance communication and maintain friendships, but also contribute to more superficial interactions and decreased face-to-face engagement. Health and wellness effects included both negative outcomes, such as stress, lack of sleep, and physical inactivity, and positive outcomes, such as emotional support during stress. The study concludes that Facebook’s overall impact on students is neither wholly positive nor negative, but depends on its usage patterns and the self-discipline of the user. It recommends digital literacy campaigns, controlled integration of social media into academic work, personal usage limits, and counseling interventions to promote healthier online habits.
