A PROPOSED COTTAGE HOSPITAL FOR OKPO OLAMABORO LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA KOGI STATE
Abstract
This report presents the proposal and design analysis for a cottage hospital to be established in Okpo, Olamaboro Local Government Area, Kogi State, Nigeria. The study is driven by the growing healthcare needs of the local population, limited access to quality medical facilities, and the urgent need for a more decentralized healthcare delivery system in rural communities. The proposed cottage hospital is designed as a secondary healthcare facility that will provide essential medical services such as outpatient care, inpatient wards, emergency treatment, maternity services, diagnostic units, and administrative support spaces. The methodology used in this study includes site analysis, spatial planning, design considerations, and a review of existing cottage hospitals within Nigeria and other developing regions. Emphasis was placed on functional efficiency, patient comfort, sustainability, and compliance with healthcare building standards. Key features of the design include adequate parking, smooth circulation, natural lighting and ventilation, accessibility for persons with disabilities, and provision for future expansion. Findings from the study show that a well designed cottage hospital in Okpo will significantly reduce healthcare gaps, ease pressure on tertiary hospitals, and improve public health outcomes within the community. The project is also expected to create employment opportunities and support local economic growth. In conclusion, the proposed design shows that small scale but well planned healthcare facilities can effectively bridge the gap between primary and tertiary care, while also supporting the goal of achieving universal health coverage in Nigeria.
