Abstract

This study evaluates cause and effects of noise pollution on the environment in Offa Local Government Area, Kwara State, with a focus on understanding community perceptions and identifying effective interventions. Using a descriptive research design, data were collected from 100 respondents through a structured questionnaire using simple random sampling techniques. Findings reveal that traffic-related activities 65(71.4%), commercial activities such as street markets and loudspeakers 55(60.4%), and religious and social gatherings 60(65.9%) are the major contributors to noise pollution in the area. Public transportation vehicles were also identified as a significant source of noise, with 50(54.9%) of respondents attributing residential noise pollution to these activities. The adverse health effects of noise pollution were evident, as 45(49.5%) of respondents reported experiencing headaches, while 65(71.4%) indicated that noise caused sleeplessness, particularly at night, with nightclubs and religious activities 33(36.3%) being the primary sources. Also, 60(65.9%) of respondents reported difficulties in concentration due to noise pollution, highlighting its cognitive and mental health implications. The study also found strong community support for regulatory and educational interventions. A significant majority 80(87.9%) believed that enforcing industrial noise regulations would reduce noise pollution, while 61(67.0%) supported awareness campaigns to educate the public on the health impacts of noise pollution. Similarly, 65(71.4%) favored the regulation of loudspeakers and public address systems as a viable control measure. Furthermore, 75(82.4%) of respondents indicated that higher education levels enhance awareness of noise pollution's effects, emphasizing the role of education in environmental management. The findings underscore the need for comprehensive noise pollution management strategies that combine enforcement of regulations, community education, and stakeholder engagement to create a quieter and healthier environment in Offa Local Government Area.
