Abstract

This work investigated into the role of drama in satirizing and correcting the negative trends of the society toward development with a focus on culture and Nigerian development, using Saint Gbilekas’s Prized Chickens Are Not Tasty as a model of negative cultural practices; identifying the problems, causes and the need to change for the better. The study was built on Feminist and Empowerment Theories. The study concludes that there is indeed a strong role drama can play in the reorientation of political and cultural practices in any society including Nigeria; and if drama in used effectively, the society becomes aware and essentially equipped to distinguish between good and bad cultural practices. The study therefore among others recommends that more plays be written against negative cultural practices and also performed at different theatres in order to create more awareness of the need for cultural re-orientation in our society today. Also more researches should be carried out in regard to the negative cultural practices against women in order to increase the amount of knowledge on the ills of such cultural practices.
