PHYTOCHEMICAL SCREENING, PHYTOCHEMICAL COMPOSITION, ANTIOXIDANT PROPERTIES AND DETERMINATION OF PIGMENTS IN THE FLOWER OF BOUNDARY TREE (NEWBOULDIA LEAVIS)
Abstract
This study investigates the phytochemical profile, antioxidant properties, and pigment composition of Newbouldia laevis flower to validate its traditional therapeutic applications. Phytochemical screening of the methanol extract of the flower showed the presence of major bioactive compounds such as tannins, phenols, saponins, flavonoids, alkaloids, steroids, and cardiac glycosides. Phytochemical composition showed tannin content of 7.39 ± 0.022 mg/g, phenol (127.64 ± 0.234 mg/g), saponin (1.20 ± 0.000 mg/g), flavonoid (19.06 ± 0.078 mg/g), alkaloid (0.97 ± 0.14 mg/g), steroid (6.64 ± 0.000 mg/g), and cardiac glycoside (8.91 ± 0.092 mg/g). Antioxidant evaluations demonstrated high free radical scavenging activity with DPPH inhibition at 85.66 ± 0.04%. Determination of Pigment composition showed that chlorophyll a and chlorophyll b were present at concentrations of 1.24 ± 0.03 mg/g and 0.89 ± 0.02 mg/g, respectively, further supporting its antioxidant capabilities. The findings support the medicinal use of Newbouldia laevis flower in traditional medicine and suggest its application in phytopharmaceutical and nutraceutical product development.
