Abstract

The modification of a charcoal corn roaster was carried out to meet the relevant safety standards in corn roasting. The modified components are the insulating material (Kaolin) to minimize heat loss and improve safety, the grilling surface and the charcoal chamber to ensure uniform heat distribution and installation of temperature indicator to maintain heat balance within the system. The performance evaluation of the charcoal corn roaster was carried out with fresh corn at varying temperatures of 2400C, 27000C and 3000C. The roasting capacity significantly increases with temperature, reaching its peak at 300°C, where the roaster can handle 66.67 corns per hour. The roasting efficiency and energy input decreases with increasing temperature. At high temperatures roasting capacity increase, the efficiency of the roasting process, in terms of energy utilization, diminishes. This suggests that the relationship between temperature and efficiency is not linear. Further investigation into the roaster's design, heat distribution, and air circulation mechanisms shall be carried out to observe the trends in roasting efficiency and energy input.
