Abstract

This study, A Syntactic Reconciliation of Adpositional Phrases and Particles in English and Anaang, takes a look at the three types of adpositional phrases, their functions and distributions with an attempt to reconcile them with Particles which are typically words that carry grammatical categories such as mood, negation, tense or case but are never infected. It holds on to the assumption that any functional word that is not capable of inflection should not be placed in the family of the word class of preposition, but as the particle for combining with the verbs to function as the phrasal verbs. This study adopts the Structural Approach as its theoretical framework; an approach which focuses explicitly on the way in which linguistic features can be described in terms of structures and systems; every linguistic item has its ‘place’ in a system, and functions, or values, derives from the relationships which it contracts with other units or systems. To achieve this purpose, this study has meticulously sorted out the syntactic categories that answer to prepositions and those that are the verbal particles for the purpose of performing the functions of phrasal verbs and carefully account for them. Conclusions were drawn that at the structural level, prepositions and particles look alike but when they appear on the functional level, it becomes very clear that they are different.
