Abstract

ABSTRACT The study was conducted at the Crop and Environmental Protection Laboratory, Ladoke Akintola University of Technology. This research project investigated the chemical composition of neem seed, Azadirachta indica and its efficacy in controlling fungal pathogens affecting cowpea leaves. Phytochemical analysis of neem seed revealed the presence of various bioactive compounds, including azadirachtin, nimbin, nimbidin, and quercetin, which are known for their potent antimicrobial properties. These compounds exhibited significant inhibitory effects against specific fungal pathogens of cowpea leaves, including Colletotrichum species. The antifungal and antibacterial properties of neem seed extracts were established through laboratory experiments, demonstrating their potential as a natural and sustainable alternative for managing plant diseases. The findings of this study highlight the importance of neem seed as a valuable resource for developing eco-friendly fungicides and underscore its potential applications in integrated pest management strategies. By exploring the antifungal properties of neem seed, this research contributes to the growing body of evidence supporting the use of botanical extracts in plant disease management. These phytochemical constituents work synergistically to enhance the antifungal and antibacterial properties of neem seed extracts, making them a promising alternative for controlling fungal pathogens in cowpea and other crops.
