TELEVISION AND WOMEN AWARENESS AND ADAPTION OF PREVENTIVE FEATURE AGAINST BREAST CANCER IN MUBI NORTH, ADAMAWA STATE
Abstract
This study is titled “Television and Women Awareness and Adaptation of Preventive Feature Against Breast Cancer in Mubi North, Adamawa State”. It examined the role television plays in creating breast cancer awareness and the adoption of preventive health measures among women within the study area, based on the growing concern over increasing breast cancer cases and the need for effective communication strategies to encourage early detection and prevention. The main objectives of the study were to assess the level of awareness of breast cancer prevention among women in Mubi North, identify specific television programs that provide relevant information on the subject, and evaluate the extent to which such programs contribute to women’s knowledge and behavioral change toward breast cancer prevention. The study employed a descriptive survey research design using structured questionnaires as the instrument of data collection, allowing for the systematic gathering of quantitative responses from the target group. The population of the study consisted of women residing in Mubi North, Adamawa State, from which a total sample of 120 respondents was drawn using a multistage sampling technique that ensured adequate representation across various districts. Data collected were analyzed using simple percentage methods and presented in tabular form, followed by discussions based on each research question. The study concluded that television plays a significant role in creating awareness and influencing the adoption of preventive practices against breast cancer, although not all exposed individuals demonstrated behavioral change. It is therefore recommended that government and health agencies should intensify efforts in producing more culturally relevant, behavior-focused, and localized television programs to further improve women’s health awareness and encourage proactive measures in combating breast cancer in rural and semi-urban communities like Mubi North.
