CAUSES AND EFFECT OF STUDENT FAILURE IN MATHEMATICS IN THE SECONDARY SCHOOL CERTIFICATE EXAMINATION (WAEC): A CASE STUDY OF LOKOJA LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA
Abstract
This study examines the causes and effects of student failure in Mathematics in the Secondary School Certificate Examination (WAEC) in Lokoja Local Government Area. Used a descriptive survey research design, this study investigates the factors contributing to poor performance, inadequate infrastructure, teacher qualification, mathematical anxiety, and socio-economic disparities. The research employed a stratified random sampling technique to select 200 students from a population of over 4,000 across public and private schools in Lokoja LGA. Data was collected through structured questionnaire and analyzed by descriptive statistic and chi-square tests. Findings indicate significant relationships between school infrastructure, mathematical anxiety, and mathematics performance. The study recommends curriculum reforms, enhanced teacher training programs, improved infrastructure, and psychological support systems to address mathematical anxiety among students.
