GROUNDWATER QUALITY ASSESSMENT OF HAND-DUG WELLS IN ITERIGBI COMMUNITY, EFFURUN, DELTA STATE
Abstract
The aim of this work is to identify whether the physiochemical parameters analyzed heavy metal
levelspresent in water samples the hand-dug wells are within the permissible limit for drinking
water and to investigate the general potability/quality of the groundwater resources in order to
determine suitability for human consumption. The water samples were collected from eight
hand-dug wells in Iterigbi community of Uvwie LGA in Delta State, Nigeria, and labeled as IT- 01 through IT-08. These samples were analyzed for physio-chemical parameters using the
standard analytical techniques while the heavy metals were subjected to Atomic Absorption
Spectrophotometer (AAS) analysis. Also, the samples' water quality index (WQI) and the Geo- accumulation index (Igeo) were calculated. The results of the physio-chemical parameters ranged
as follows: pH (5.25– 7.32), Total Dissolved Solids (132 – 251Mg/l), Electric Conductivity (264
– 422µS/cm), Turbidity (0.44 – 1.55NTU), Temperature (25.4 – 26.1ᵒC). The results of the
heavy metals ranged as: Pb (
