Abstract

In emergency situations, rapid and reliable communication is critical to preserving life and minimizing harm. However, traditional methods such as manual dialing or texting often fail under conditions of panic, injury, or limited connectivity. This project presents FastSOS, a cross-platform mobile emergency response application developed using React Native and the Expo SDK. The application enables users to send emergency alerts, including real-time GPS coordinates, to predefined contacts via single-button or gesture-based activation. Designed with a focus on speed, discretion, and accessibility, FastSOS operates effectively even in offline environments through SMS fallback, and it incorporates security measures such as encrypted data storage and user authentication. The project followed a structured development methodology encompassing requirement analysis, system design, implementation, testing, and evaluation. Performance assessments demonstrated the app’s ability to consistently fetch accurate location data with minimal delay, and manual testing confirmed its reliability across core features. FastSOS addresses significant gaps in existing emergency systems—such as platform dependency and lack of real-time tracking—and represents a scalable solution for enhancing personal safety, particularly in low-infrastructure regions. Recommendations include integration with local emergency services, multilingual support, and the use of predictive AI for proactive alerting.
