Abstract

ABSTRACT This study assessed hygiene and sanitation practices among female hostel residents at Sa’adu Zungur University, Gadau Campus, Bauchi State, Nigeria. A descriptive cross-sectional survey of 196 students using a structured questionnaire revealed high knowledge of hygiene and sanitation, with 94.4% reporting awareness and 66.8% recognizing it as encompassing practices such as handwashing, waste disposal, and environmental cleanliness. Most respondents practiced regular bathing, handwashing after toilet use, and use of waste bins, though some lapses indicated a gap between knowledge and behavior. In terms of facilities, 53.6% had reliable water supply while others experienced scarcity, and only 61.2% found waste bins adequate, with additional challenges related to toilets, bathrooms, and menstrual hygiene management. The study recommends improved provision and maintenance of water supply, toilets, and waste disposal systems, alongside regular health education and adequate menstrual hygiene facilities, to promote consistent hygiene practices and safeguard students’ well-being.
