PREVALENCE AND RISK FACTORS ASSOCIATED WITH GONORRHEA AMONG SA’ADU ZUNGUR UNIVERSITY STUDENT
Abstract
ABSTRACT
This study investigated the prevalence and risk factors associated with gonorrhea among students of Sa’adu Zungur University. A total of 10 samples (urine/high vaginal swabs) were collected and analyzed using culture, Gram staining, oxidase test, and biochemical methods. Results showed a 40% prevalence of Neisseria gonorrheae. High resistance was observed to ciprofloxacin (90%) and tetracycline (100%), while all isolates remained susceptible to ceftriaxone and cefixime. About 40% of infected individuals were asymptomatic, highlighting the role of silent carriers in disease transmission. The findings suggest the need for routine STI screening, improved public health awareness, and continued antibiotic resistance monitoring in the university community
