Abstract

Medicinal plants are important sources of natural compounds with therapeutic potential. Vitis vinifera L. (grapevine) is widely cultivated for its fruits, but its leaves are less explored for medicinal purposes. This study investigated the phytochemical constituents and antifungal activities of leaves of Vitis vinifera. Ethanolic and Aqeous extracts were prepared and subjected to qualitative phytochemical screening using standard methods. Antifungal activity was evaluated against A.niger, Fusarium spp., and Alternaria spp using the agar well diffusion technique, while the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) was determined by serial dilution and was found to be 12.5, 25.0 and 12.5mg/ml for A.niger, Fusarium spp., and Alternaria spp. respectively for ethanolic extract.Minimum fungicidal concentration was 6.25, 25.0 and 50.0mg/ml for both A.niger, Fusarium spp., and Alternaria spp. respectively. The results revealed the presence of phenols, flavonoids, tannins, saponins, glycosides in both extract and subsequent absence of alkaloids. Ethanolic extracts showed higher antifungal activity than aqeousleaf extracts. The study concludes that Vitis vinifera leaves possess antifungal properties and may serve as source of natural antifungal agents.
