EVALUATION OF PERIWINKLE SHELL AS A PARTIAL REPLACEMENT FOR FINE AGGREGATE IN FLEXIBLE PAVEMENT
Abstract
ABSTRACT
This project focuses on the evaluation of periwinkle shell as a partial replacement
for fine aggregate in flexible pavement. The research was carried out to assess the
suitability of periwinkle shell as an alternative material for fine aggregate in
flexible pavement, with the aim of promoting sustainable construction and
reducing environmental waste. Fine aggregate was partially replaced with
periwinkle shell at varying proportions of 0%, 5%, 10%, 15%, 20%, and 25% by
weight of fine aggregate. Laboratory tests were conducted to determine key
properties such as Marshall Stability, flow value and bulk density. This research
effectively demonstrates that periwinkle shell can serve as a viable substitute for
fine aggregate in asphalt pavement mixtures, with replacement levels of up to 20%.
The optimal performance was identified at a 15% replacement rate. The study
concludes that periwinkle shell can be effectively used as a partial replacement for
fine aggregate up to 20% in flexible pavement construction. This provides an ecofriendly and economical alternative while reducing the dependency on natural sand
and minimizing environmental pollution caused by shell waste
