Abstract

ABSTRACT Prevalence of foodborne bacterial pathogens from intestinal tract of students of Fidei Polytechnic Gboko, Benue State was studied. A total of fifty (50) sample were analyzed using standard plate count technique. A total of seven bacteria species were isolated. These include Escherichia coli, Salmonella spp, vibro cholera, shigella spp, pseudomonas spp, streptococcus feacalis and enterobacter aerogenes. Among the isolated Escherichia coli has the highest prevalence 28(56%), followed by Salmonella spp 23 (46%) then Pseudomonas spp and Enterobacter aerogenes had a prevalence of 22 (44%) and 22 (44%) respectively. Then shigella 15 (30%) and lastly Streptococcus feacalis with prevalence of 11 (22%). The presence of the above bacteria species deduce foodborne diseases. This could be the possible cause of diarrhea; abdominal pain, nosocomial among other. It is recommended that standard hygienic practices and sanitary measures should be ensured by the students under study.
