DETERMINATION OF PHYTOCHEMICALS OF THE LEAVE AND SEED OF MORINGA OLEIFERA
Abstract
ABSTRACT
This study aimed to Determine The Phytochemical properties of Moringa
oleifera Leaves and Seeds in ombi I,lafia,Nasarawa State. The fresh leaves
and seeds of the plant was collected from its natural habitat in Lafia Local
Govemment Area of Nasarawa State,Nigeria. It was authenticated by the
Sciences Laboratory Department of Isa Mustapha Agwai 1 Polytechnic,
Lafia,Nasarawa(IMAP).The plant samples were labeled and deposited in
the Laboratory at the Department of Science Laboratory Technology.
Phytochemical screening was carried out to identify the prescence of
bioactive compounds such as alkaloids,saponins,flavonoids,tannins,
phenols acid, steroids, and sterols in both seed and leaves of the Moringa
oleifera. The results indicated that both seed and leaves of Moringa oleifera
contained several essential phytochemicals, but the concentrations varied.
The seed exhibited higher levels of saponins, alkanoids, and phenols,
compounds known for their cardiovascular health benefits. On the other
hand, leaves had higher flavonoid content, known for its potent antioxidant
and anti-inflammatory properties. The less concentration of flavonoids in
methanol extract and the less concentration of phenols in leaves in the
methanol extract demonstrated distinct differences in their phytochemical
profiles. This comparative analysis suggests that while Moringa olefera seed
may offer more significant cardiovascular protection due to their saponin
and alkanoids content,Moringa oleifera leaves may provide better
antioxidant protection due to their higher flavonoid levels. The findings
highlight the importance of understanding the phytochemical composition
of the Moringa olefera seed and leaves, which can promote the cultivation
of the varieties based on their specific health benefits.
