ASSESSMENT OF LIBRARY AND INFORMATION SCIENCE PROFESSIONALS SKILLS AND COMPETENCIES IN ABUBAKAR TAFAWA BALEWA UNIVESITY LIBRARY BAUCHI

The study deal with the assessment of library and information science professional skills and competencies in Abubakar tafawabalewa university library Bauchi. The objective of the study is to findout knowledge best competencies that is require from a library and information science professional, to find out if the application of knowledge best skills and competencies effect the performance of information science professional, to find out if library and information science professionals apply the skills and competencies they have to library profession. The researcher adopted survey research method. The population of the study is fifty eight (58) which were also used and the sample size of the study. Questioner was used as instrument for data collection. The data collection were analyzed using sample table, frequency and percentage. The finding showed that information science professional have more knowledge of information organization and a goodknowledge of information service and communication skills which are necessary for effectively running and information center. Knowledge of information organization and information resource as highly effective and information professional in effectively performing their duties, a good knowledge and cataloguing and classification, in the discharged of their duties also the knowledge of information organization and information resource management is highly applied which help them to increase their competency. Lack of fund, poor access to ICT facility and poor financial management have impeded the competency of information science profession in the discharge of their duties best on the finding, its concluded that the need of professional librarians are two-fold. The first one is the need to emprise the acquisition and updating of knowledge best competency .the other require further development of skills best competency. The study recommended information science professional in Abubakar Tafawa Balewa university need to updated their ICT knowledge base and skills base competencies by becoming computer littered and internet access should be provided as well as encouraging them to exploit internet facility which will help in effective discharge of their duties.
