Abstract

ABSTRACT The Nigerian manufacturing sector, despite its significant contribution to national output, continues to grapple with persistent challenges such as operational inefficiencies, financial volatility, and underutilization of strategic management tools. In response to these issues, this study evaluates the effectiveness of financial statement analysis (FSA) on the performance outcomes of Nestlé Nigeria Plc, a leading manufacturing company. The specific objectives were to: (i) examine the relationship between ratio analysis and performance outcomes; (ii) assess the effect of trend analysis on profitability and operational efficiency; and (iii) determine the impact of comparative financial statement usage on financial decision-making within Nestlé Nigeria Plc. Adopting a descriptive case study design, the research utilized secondary data from nine years (2016–2024) of audited annual financial statements. Quantitative techniques, including ratio analysis, trend analysis, and comparative analysis, were employed to evaluate key performance indicators such as profitability (measured by return on assets), liquidity, and sustainability. The findings revealed that ratio analysis has a significant positive effect on profitability, while trend and comparative analyses showed statistically insignificant impacts on short-term performance. The study concludes that internal financial tools, particularly ratio analysis, play a crucial role in enhancing profitability and decision-making in manufacturing firms. It is recommended that Nestlé Nigeria Plc prioritize the continuous application of ratio analysis, integrate trend analysis with real-time metrics, and use comparative analysis as a supplementary tool for strategic benchmarking. Additionally, investment in staff capacity and timely, accurate financial reporting are essential for sustaining improved performance.
