Abstract

Traffic congestion at cross-road junctions is a major issue in urban transportation, which often result in long delays, increase in fuel usage, and environmental pollution. Conventional traffic signal systems use loop timing intervals which fails to adjust to change in traffic circumstances, however, this results in inefficiencies and increased congestion. The goal of this project is to create and install a Density-Based Traffic Signal System that adjusts signal timings based on real-time traffic density, by using Arduino microcontroller and infrared (IR) sensors. The system detects vehicle density on each lane at a crossroad, processes the data, and allocates green light duration accordingly, prioritizing lanes with higher traffic volumes. This project helps to improve traffic flow, reduce vehicle waiting times, improve road safety, and also minimizes fuel wastage and emissions. This project, which combines real-time data processing and adaptive signal control, provides a cost-effective and scalable solution to urban traffic congestion. It improves traffic management; however, its effectiveness may be influenced by factors such as unexpected road incidents, infrastructure requirements, and system maintenance. Nonetheless, the density-based traffic signal system offers a significant improvement over traditional fixed-timing signals and contributes to a more sustainable and intelligent urban traffic management system.
