HISTOLOGICAL EFFECT OF CEFIXIME ON THE LUNGS OF MALE ALBINO RATS.
Abstract
This study was aimed at investigating the histological effect of cefixime
on the lungs of Adult albino rat. Twenty four (24) rats with an average
weight of 148 4.45 were randomly divided into four (4) groups of six (6)
rats per cage. Group I (control) was treated with deionized distilled water
and was fed daily for seven (7) days. Group II was administered daily
oral doses of 2500mg/kg of cefixime daily for seven (7) days. Group III
were treated with 5000mg/kg of cefixime daily for seven (7) days. Group
IV were administered daily oral doses of 7500mg/kg of cefixime for
seven (7) days. The body weight of the animal were determined before
drug administration and twenty four (24) hours after the drug
administration and recorded. The rats were sacrificed twenty four (24)
hours after the last drug administration. The lungs were harvested and
immediately fixed in 10% formal saline for histological studies. The
tissue sections were routinely processed (paraffin wax technique). 5
micrometer section of each tissue were stained with H & E staining
technique. Photo micro graphs of the slides were captured and result
recorded. The result of this study revealed that Group I (control) had a
mean weight of 1484.4g before the experiment and 151.22.88g after
the experiment. Group II had a mean weight of 1404.83 before the
experiment and 142.5 3.84g experiment and 150.0 2.291g after the
experiment. Group IV had a mean weight Result obtained revealed that
there was no statistical significant difference in their weights when
compared to the control group (p>0.05) on the lungs of make albino
rats. Conclusively, cefixime in this study on the lungs was found
features of diffuse haemorrhage and moderate pulmonary congestion.
